Laurence T. Robbins | English teacher, 69

Laurence T. Robbins, 69, of South Philadelphia, a high school English teacher for more than 35 years, died of heart failure Jan. 11. Mr. Robbins had become ill while walking home from dinner with friends.

Most of Mr. Robbins' teaching career was spent at West Philadelphia High School, where he also advised the school newspaper staff and assisted with theatrical productions as adviser to the drama club.

Before retiring in the late 1990s, he taught at the Franklin Learning Center in Philadelphia for more than a decade.

Mr. Robbins graduated from Central High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Temple University in 1962.

He was a subscriber and patron of the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Opera Company of Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Ballet, and numerous drama organizations, said his sister, Kathleen Ray. He was an avid traveler and especially enjoyed the theater scene in London, she said.

In addition to his sister, Mr. Robbins is survived by two nephews.
